Columbia Univesity drug bust: Operation Ivy League

Joe Pascente

The Columbia University drug bust has made the news as five students were arrested Tuesday for selling drugs to undercover cops. Chris Coles, Harrison David, Adam Klein, Jose Perez and Michael Wymbs were the five students who allegedly sold up to $11,000 in drugs.

According to Myfoxny.com, “Undercover NYPD Narcotics officers made 31 purchases of a variety of drugs including cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, Adderall and LSD starting in July from the students.”

Three drug dealers who supplied these students were also arrested.

The Columbia University drug bust was given the name, “Operation Ivy League,” by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, and happened mostly in three fraternity houses: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Pi Kappa Alpha and Psi Upsilon.

The students pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Manhattan Criminal Court.

According to Newsday.com, one of the students, Chris Coles, claimed to sell the drugs to pay for his tuition. But Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, “This is no way to work your way through college. The fact that a supplier to the Columbia students was willing to kill his rivals should demolish any argument that drugs on campus is a victimless crime.”

Our take: Selling drugs is no way to pay for tuition. Selling drugs is no way to go through life. Hopefully these students learn a valuable lesson from this and stray away from every doing this again. Everyone makes mistakes and now they need to get back on track and find a legal way to make some money.
